What Is FFMI?
Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) measures the amount of muscle mass a person has relative to their height, similar to how BMI measures total body weight relative to height — but only counting lean (fat-free) tissue. It was developed by researchers studying the upper limits of natural muscle development and is widely used in sports science and fitness communities to benchmark muscle development.
How FFMI Is Calculated
FFMI = Lean Mass ÷ Height (m)²
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.3 × (1.8 − Height in metres)
The normalized formula adjusts for height, making comparisons fair across people of different statures.
The Natural Limit
A landmark 1995 study by Kouri et al. found that elite natural (drug-free) bodybuilders rarely exceeded an FFMI of 25. This has become a widely referenced benchmark. Values above 26 are generally considered to exceed what is achievable naturally for most people, though genetic outliers exist.
